A Companion of Jesus

Do you sometimes wonder where God is?

There have been times in my life when I have wondered where God is. When my wife died suddenly next to me in bed in the middle of the night at the age of 46, I wrestled with my conception or misconception of God. In the pain and aftermath of that night I am coming to understand that in these places of pain and suffering, I am not alone. The risen Lord is with me and he weeps with me and will do so until that day when every tear will be wiped away. (Revelation 21:4)

Jesus experienced pain and suffering. He suffered physically and had to rest. (John 4:6) He suffered emotionally and openly wept.(John 11:34) He suffered the death of his friends and the rejection of his own people. (John 11. Matthew 14. 1 – 13a. 1 John 1.11.) He sweated blood and suffered abuse, (Luke22.44.) both physically and verbally. (Matthew 27. 27 –44) He suffered death. (Matthew 27.50. Mark 15.37. Luke23. 46. John 19.28)

You maybe experiencing pain and suffering now. It maybe physical, emotional or even spiritual. You may be at the end of your rope and can see no light at the end of the tunnel. Let me tell you, you are not alone, the risen Lord is with you. Though you don’t see him, though you don’t feel his presence, though you are caught in such a deep pit of despair. The Lord is with you!

You have done nothing to cause him to change his love for you (Though you may reason so). He does not love you less, He cannot love you less, though you may feel cut off, alone and unloved. His very nature is love. God is Love. (1John 4. 16)

Don’t look to your feelings, which thrive on the self-centred emotions of our fallen self. Look up into the eyes of Love, into the gaze of Abba.

This is but a moment in the preparation for eternity and even though you will hurt and the pain may not vanish and the wounds may still be visible to yourself and others, may you know the furious longing of God’s love which is for you.

Sometimes physical and emotional healing happens, by the grace of God. Sometime it doesn’t, by the grace of God. His grace is sufficient and His love is unconditional and forever. Live in His love.

‘God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love’. (1Jn 4. 16-18)
